Luis Torres is a math coach in Los Angeles. He has worked as a public school teacher in urban settings since 2013. Torres was part of an organizing team that helped establish the largest charter union in Oakland, and he sat on the union board as treasurer. He has worked with various organizations on teacher recruitment and retention, Oakland education policies, and district financial issues. His interest is in working closely with teachers, school site leaders, and communities to develop classroom practices and school cultures that foster self-confidence, self-esteem, and academic success in every student. He earned his B.A. in sociology from the University of California, Los Angeles, and his M.A. in education and teaching credential from the University of Southern California. He also served in the U.S. Marine Corps and did two tours in Iraq.
